Although I dream of a classroom where all my students work well together, I know this is not realistic. When dealing with conflict in the classroom, my goal is to teach students what they must do to make peace with one another on their own. As much as possible, I calmly encourage students to resolve problems on their own without my interference. If necessary, I coach students as they work out their issues, and suggest ways to resolve issues. I believe that this method is effective because it shows students that I believe in them, and makes students more responsible for their own behaviors. Letting children learn how to relate with one another peaceably not only deals with current issues, but also builds social skills for the future.
