Volunteer Experience

Homework Tutor

I volunteered as homework tutor in a Latino trailer park and at an inner-city library in Columbus, OH. These experiences gave me practical experience providing scaffolding and encouragement to students as they completed various academic assignments.

Informal English Teacher

I lived in Spain for six months before starting my college career. During that time I helped lead a children’s English club, and planned a children’s English camp. I also attended intercambios to help others learn English and to better my Spanish speaking skills. Intercambios are often held in cafes and are opportunities for individuals to connect with others who don’t speak their own native language, helping one another learn another language through conversation.

Sunday School Teacher

I have fond memories of Sunday School lessons involving hands-on learning! The other lessons that were not hands-on probably covered good content, but I don’t remember them. Since I want my students to remember their learning, I plan and carry out games, crafts, re-enactments, and object lessons for Pre- school to 4th grade children at a local church. Over the years I have taught 3rd and 4th grade the most, but the little ones are so fun too!

Good News Club Host

Good News Club is a program that seeks to reach communities with the good news of Jesus. It meets in churches and homes, and children are invited gather. I have had the pleasure of hosting in my backyard. Getting to know the neighbor kids and sharing Christ with them is a pleasure!
